History:

Uscha Pohl / UP&CO embraced the medium ‘film’ early on.
New York: When invited in 1999 to participate in P.S.1. MoMA exhibition Criss Cross: Some Young New Yorkers III, Uscha Pohl chose ‘identity’ as subject and presented UP&CO with own films created from personal super 8 footage in collaboration with Hugo Tillmann, screened in a fashion changing room, accompanied Pohl’s digitally created images. Other personal exhibitions and installations followed in MoMA midtown and downtown, in galleries Brooklyn and downtown, including own fashion, photography, film, drawings and often combined in room installations.

Having met in Cologne in the 1980s, filmmaker Jan Höhe has been a close collaborator since filming UP&CO’s first fashionshow in 1997 — which had evolved from UP&CO first producing the legendary Jeremy Deller T Shirt Collection ‘Suburban Genius’.

London, 2012: Pohl went on a quest to find answers and solutions to pressing global issues regarding water and the climate crisis. Under the name ‘It’s Time To Give Back’ the series ‘Flood and Drought’ infomercials were produced, presented by Femi Taylor, famously Oola in Starwars, filmed and edited by Jan Höhe.

‘Flood and Drought’ was launched October 2014, and the issue has become ever more pressing since. The core of the issue goes back to human’s dissociation – a situation aggravated by the digital age and AI. We need to start re-connecting to nature – our nature, ourselves and practice overarching love, caring, respect, everything else perpetuates the downward spiral of selfdestruction.
