ABOUT

UP&CO  (Uscha Pohl & Company) launched 1996 out of Pohl’s Tribeca New York interdisciplinary art space combing in art, fashion, design and sustainability.

Writer, artist, designer, curator, Uscha Pohl, while running UP&CO in New York, Pohl concurrently lectured menswear fashion at the Royal College of Art in London for eighteen years. UP&CO NY solo shows included Lara Schnitger, Juan Manuel Echavarría, Mark Dagley, Mia Enell, Judith Eisler, Cees Krijnen, Yvette Brackman.

Pohl herself having moved to New York from London, in a series of exhibitions UP&CO presented Sarah Staton’s ‘Supastore NY’: UP&CO commissioned a Staton designed ‘mini gallery in wood on wheels’ which became home to works of the then emerging ‘Young British Artists’  (YBA), enabling for many of the artists the first leap across the pond.

1997 Pohl launched the cross cultural magazine VERY, 1998 her own fashion label UP&CO, initially expanding from the UP&CO produced T shirt Collection ‘Suburban Genius’ by Jeremy Deller. The fashion label, VERY magazine as well as personal work by Uscha Pohl was featured in art exhibitions including ‘Contemporary Self Portraits’, Sean Kelly Gallery 1998, Criss Cross Some Young New Yorkers, MoMA P.S.1. 1999), UP&CO at MoMA downtown 1999, Mumok Vienna, 1999. Spring 2000, as collaborative art project with Cees Krijnen, Pohl created the ‘Divorcée Collection and together they launched the ‘Woman in Divorce Battle on Tour.’ Taking off from the Dutch embassy at the Rockefeller Center the tour was followed by a TV crew for an entire year, resulting in the award winning documentary ‘Dutch Heroes’.

Autumn 2000 Pohl introduced VERYstyleguide, which in September 2001 launched as threefold guide series, London, New York and Fashion in a collaboration with the Sunday Times and Barnes & Noble, London. The city guides with personal recommendations of artusts gallerists, musicians, created a creative network worldwide as the series expanded to Paris, Berlin and Rio de Janeiro. The Fashion guides were B2B guides for designers and included Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles and more; from 2006 the guides doubled up with a flip-cover side featuring sustainable addresses giving hands on tips for ecological choices taking care of people and planet.

From 2004 Pohl continued UP&CO from her London base, initially taking over the Modern Art space on Redchurch Street, Shoreditch, as VERYtrolley Gallery with Gigi Giannuzzi, as well as opening a VERY UP&CO multiple store next door within the artist run gallery Studio 1.1.

Taking on the estate of Erinna König in Düsseldorf in 2023, UP&CO opened as UP&CO@EK STUDIO, converting the late artist’s studio into a gallery. 2025 saw the launch of the new look edition TH.EVERYTHING artnewspaper. Initially created by Cees Krijnen in 2011 as a nod to Pohl’s VERY Magazine, the paper is now expanded, redesigned, edited by Uscha Pohl and published twice a year.
